New EFIN Scam Email Targets Tax Pros

IRS is warning tax pros about an email scam that impersonates software companies in an attempt to steal Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs). The scammers claim that they need EFIN verification in order to transmit tax returns. IRS has already received dozens of reports of this scam.

This scam email includes a U.S.-based area code for faxing EFIN documents, and also provides instructions on obtaining EFIN documentation from IRS e-Services. Variations include using different fax numbers for software vendors, inconsistencies in the email wording, and a German footer. This email goes on to list the steps to take to get a copy of your IRS Application Summary from e-Services. Get additional details here.
