Hosted by CSEA Chapters Statewide

Description
Each year, many businesses find themselves unprepared for tax season because essential records are missing. There are many reasons records may be missing such as being lost to natural disasters, system failures, or simply inconsistent bookkeeping practices. This session will explore practical approaches tax professionals can use when working with clients who lack sufficient documentation. We will discuss techniques for recreating financial records, when and how estimates may be relied upon, and how the “Cohan Rule” can support these efforts during both return preparation and IRS audits.
Learning Objectives
1) Identify practical methods for reconstructing incomplete or missing business records in the context of return preparation and IRS examinations.
2. Evaluate when and how estimates may be appropriately used to support reported income and deductions when documentation is insufficient.
3. Apply the Cohan Rule effectively and understand its limitations to strengthen a taxpayer’s position during audits and controversy matters.
